Moisture, Condensation & Indoor Air Quality

How water actually moves through buildings — bulk water, air leakage, vapour diffusion and capillarity — and the four control layers that manage it. Condensation-safe assemblies, ventilation design, construction-phase moisture risks and the checks that prove a dry, healthy building.

Condensation is the defect that arrived with better building. Tighter, better-insulated houses hold moisture that older draughty ones let out, and the result shows up as mould behind wardrobes, black spotting on ceilings and rot in framing that was dry the day it went in. Owners blame the builder, and by the time it is visible the wall is already wet.

This course works from the physics rather than the symptom: how water actually moves through a building as bulk water, air leakage, vapour diffusion and capillary action, and the four control layers that manage each one. It then applies that to the details where NSW houses actually fail, including the NCC 2022 condensation provisions, vapour-permeable sarking, exhaust and ventilation requirements, and where a vapour barrier on the wrong side of the wall turns a dry building into a wet one.

It is filed under the NSW Technical issues CPD topic, and earns points at the 1-point-per-hour tier under the NSW scheme.

How water actually moves through buildings — bulk water, air leakage, vapour diffusion and capillarity — and the four control layers that manage it. Condensation-safe assemblies, ventilation design, construction-phase moisture risks and the checks that prove a dry, healthy building.

You'll learn: Apply the four moisture control layers and ventilation principles to design and build assemblies that stay dry and maintain healthy indoor air.

Questions about this course

Who is this course for?

Licensed NSW builders and supervisors building or renovating houses to current NCC energy provisions. It suits anyone who has had a mould or condensation callback and wants to know which detail caused it.

Does this course count toward my NSW builder CPD?

It is interactive learning on an approved topic (Technical issues) with stated learning outcomes from a provider with industry expertise, which is the 1-point-per-hour tier under the NSW scheme. The certificate carries the topic, duration, assessment and points for your diary.

Is it about mould remediation?

No. It is about preventing the conditions that grow mould, and diagnosing which moisture mechanism is at work. Remediation of an existing outbreak is a separate specialist question.

What is the assessment?

A short assessment with an 80 per cent pass mark and unlimited attempts. The PDF certificate issues the moment you pass and stays in your account.
