NSW builder CPD guide

Contractor licence and supervisor certificate: do you need 24 CPD points?

No. NSW CPD attaches to the person, not the paper. What each credential is, who has the CPD duty on a company licence, and how one twelve-point year covers both.

Plenty of NSW builders hold two pieces of paper: an individual contractor licence that lets them contract for residential building work, and a qualified supervisor certificate that lets them supervise it, often because they are also the nominated supervisor on a company licence. A common worry at renewal is whether that means two lots of CPD. It does not.

The short version

The NSW CPD requirement applies to you as an individual: 12 points in the 12 months before renewal. Holding a contractor licence and a supervisor certificate, or a builder licence and a pool builder licence, does not double it. A company licence earns no points itself; the individuals behind it carry the duty.

The credentials, briefly

CredentialWhat it lets you doCPD?
Individual contractor licenceContract with owners to carry out residential building work (over $5,000 in labour and materials, GST included)Yes, 12 points a year for the individual
Qualified supervisor certificateSupervise residential building work; be the nominated supervisor for a company or partnership licenceYes, 12 points a year for the individual
Company or partnership contractor licenceLets the entity contract; requires a nominated qualified supervisorNot itself. The nominated individual does the CPD

Licences are issued for 1, 3 or 5 years, and the CPD requirement is annual across every year of the term regardless of which credential is renewing.

Why it is one requirement, not two

The NSW Government page describes the requirement as applying to individuals licensed as a builder or swimming pool builder under the Home Building Act, and it names both contractor licence holders and qualified supervisor certificate holders. It sets one number: 12 points a year. There is no per-credential multiplier anywhere in it. The purpose is that the person doing the work keeps their knowledge current, and a person only needs to learn something once.

Two credentials, two renewal dates

Where it gets slightly fiddly is timing. A contractor licence and a supervisor certificate can expire on different dates, and each renewal looks at the 12 months before its own date. The same activities can count for both, provided they sit inside each window. Practically:

  • Write both renewal dates at the top of your CPD diary.
  • Spread activities through the year rather than bunching them, so each 12-month window looking back from either date contains 12 points.
  • Track carry-forward against each date. Up to 11 surplus points roll forward 12 months; the carry-forward guide has the arithmetic.

If the two dates are far apart, the simplest approach is a little over 12 points in every 12-month period, which covers both windows without any calculation.

Company licences and nominated supervisors

A company holds the contractor licence; a person holds the supervisor certificate that qualifies the company to have it. The CPD obligation sits with that person. If the nominated supervisor leaves and someone else is nominated, the requirement moves with the role: the new nominee needs their own 12 points in the 12 months before their certificate renews. Directors who are not licensed individuals have no CPD requirement of their own.

Records: keep one diary for yourself, not one per credential, and hold it with the evidence for three renewal periods. At audit the question is whether you, the individual, earned 12 points in the relevant 12 months, and one diary answers it for every credential you hold.

What to do with the year you save

Twelve points is twelve hours of interactive learning at 1 point per hour. Spend it on the topic that matches the work you actually supervise. Every PointCPD course is filed under one of the eight NSW topics and issues a certificate with your name and licence number, the topic, duration, assessment and points, which serves whichever renewal is next. The full rules are in the complete NSW CPD guide.

Questions builders ask

I am the nominated supervisor on my company's licence. Who does the CPD?

You do. A company or partnership contractor licence does not earn points; the CPD requirement applies to the individuals licensed under the Home Building Act, including the qualified supervisor certificate holder nominated on the company licence.

Do my two credentials have different renewal dates for CPD?

They can have different expiry dates, and each renewal will look at the 12 months before its own date. One set of activities can satisfy both as long as the points fall inside each renewal's 12-month window. Keep one diary and note both dates in it.

Does a swimming pool builder licence add another 12 points?

No. The requirement is per person. A builder who also holds a swimming pool builder licence needs 12 points a year, not 24.
