Falls from height are the leading cause of death on Australian residential building sites, and the residential sector is where the worst of it happens: single-storey roofs, unprotected edges on second floors, ladders used as work platforms because the scaffold was not worth the hire. Under the NSW WHS framework the builder is the person conducting the business, and the duty to manage the risk of falls sits with you whether or not you are the one on the roof.

This course covers the hierarchy of fall protection as the NSW WHS Regulation applies it, from eliminating the work at height through to harness systems as the last resort; what a compliant approach looks like for roof work, scaffolding and ladders on a house site; who has to be trained and competent for what; the emergency and rescue planning that most sites do not have; and the inspection regimes for the gear. It is built around site photographs: you identify what is wrong and choose the control, then see whether a SafeWork inspector would have accepted it.

It is filed under the NSW Safety CPD topic, where roof work is one of the regulator’s named examples, and earns points at the 1-point-per-hour tier under the NSW scheme.
